Rusty Cooley debut ''Rusty Cooley'' From Tin Foil MusicApril 2004 |
| Rusty Cooley debut ''Rusty Cooley'' Rusty Cooley is the reigning king of shred guitar, no doubt about it. The man has gone from the speed kid in Texas to an underground sensation, and has now been picked up by Lion records as a recording artist, CFH as a video instructor, and none other than Guitar Player Magazine as columnist. He is a past interviewee of the "Guitar Gods" series and last year was voted into the top 10 "Fastest Shredder of All Time" list in Guitar-One Magazine. Let's take a quick look at his debut Lion Records CD simply titled "Rusty Cooley" with a long-overdue review! The disc kicks off with "Under the Influence", a high-tension piece that allows his guitar to build slowly, break into a melodic theme, and finally explode with classic Rusty fair. Rusty throws down the gauntlet on this one, too, with a break that just screams "King of the Hill!". He wastes no time charging into "The Butcher", "Dark Matter", "Dominion", and other amazing tracks that feature not only his patented uber-speed licks, but his amazing display of tone, control, and passion. One of my favorite tracks is "E.B.E.", where Rusty grabs up the wah-pedal and opens up a can of pentatonic fire....Texas-style! From octave-doubled riffs to raging string bends to super-charged sweeps, Rusty pulls out all the stops on this incredible track. Another track, "War of Angels", features a HUGE bass, intricate guitar/keys doubling, massive melodic theme, and Rusty's screaming guitar blended into it all, and tracks like "Jazzmine's Song" demonstrate Rusty to be far more than just a speed-demon, combining super-sonic lines with beautiful, flowing melodies and a half-time steeped-in-verb break. Then there is "Hillbilly Militia" - pure madness! I recall in my first piece on Rusty, I said, "Rusty's playing is extremely fast, extremely fluid, extremely musical, extremely emotional, and extremely sophisticated - demonstrating an understanding of advanced musical concepts while still rocking out. These qualities have made him one of the most exciting rock players to hit the scene in years, amazing fans and guitarists alike.". I think this still holds true, and this CD will make a believer out of you. So, when is the follow-up coming, Rusty?
